Delta Force

“Infiltrate a hostage situation and try to recover civilians from a dangerous threat.”
Delta Force is a singleplayer twin-stick shooter game playable on PC with a controller. Lucas UNY was the art, level design, programming and I was a collaborator for the Game Design part. The goal of this project was to build a twin-stick shooter game with only geometrical shapes as assets.

Game Design
For this project, our main challenge was to mix both stealth and twin-stick genres. Twin-stick shooter games tend to have a very fast and "no-brain" gameplay, where the player has to shoot basically everything he sees. We wanted to do the opposite by creating a rather slow and strategic gameplay.
The first thing was to design the player character :

movement : speed set by joystick's tilt

weapons : single bullet gun, grenade + grenade packs

health : basic health points + health packs
Sound effect feature
As you can see in the video and with this image, the player's main feature is his "sound barrier". The idea was to symbolize the sound the players makes while moving. Since it is very difficult to build this feature realistically, we simplified it by making it grow by the player speed.
When this barrier touches a enemy, he is alerted and starts chasing / shooting the player.

Thermal sight feature
The player has the ability to use his thermal sight for a short amount of time to spot any enemy in range through obscurity and walls.

With this the advantage of surprise, the player can kill enemies through some fine walls.
Enemies
There are 3 types of enemies in Delta Force :
The guard
He is pretty normal, he moves slowly, has a lot of health points and can shoot from medium range.
The kamikaze
The explosive one. When spotted, he will rush you at full speed trying to explode near you dealing a lot of damages. Be careful when you kill him, he will also create an explosion on his corpse.
The sniper
The sniper can spot and shoot you from a very long range. His shots are deadly but has very low health points.

Level Design
We tried to replicate a real life office for the main level with different rooms and corridors.

The player is able to make his own original way through the level due to its open aspect.
​
We also wanted to create a procedural level using tiles but unfortunately, the time given for the project was insufficient.
